Indian sarsaparilla (Hemidesmus indicus) is a highly valued plant in Ayurveda and is one of the rasayanas, plants that revitalize and strengthen. Sarsaparilla balances all three doshas. It has a diuretic effect and helps to eliminate harmful metabolic products through the kidneys. This action removes blemishes, acne, pimples and relieves rheumatic joint problems. It lowers the uric acid in the blood and deacidifies. When you have a cold, it has an antibacterial, sweat-inducing and anti-inflammatory effect. It calms, relaxes and makes it easier to fall asleep. Sarsaparilla ensures balanced sugar and cholesterol levels. In India it is also used as an aphrodisiac herb for both men and women.
